THE IMPACT OF SECOND LIFE ON REALITY - WHAT IS REAL?

I was really interested in the aspect of virtual world learning that Judy discussed in a lecture. The example of a man using a taller avatar during a business meeting and finding his confidence increased once back in the office. I think the social potential of the virtual world is pretty limitless and am keen to hear more about studies being done on the subject. Also hearing the creator of second life Phillip Rosedale say that there was an interesting phenomenon where people seems to "behave better" in the virtual world and thinking about the impact this could have on daily life outside the virtual world. And the idea that many people feel that conferencing/holding meetings in a system such as second life is more personal and effective than something such as video conferencing is an interesting idea also.

These are some helpful sites with info about how to operate second life and also some articles discussing the impact of virtual world gaming on reality.

COLLABORATIVE PROJECT - OUR VIRTUAL LIBRARY DESIGN IN SECOND LIFE

T
This screenshot shows the only traditional library element we incorporated into our design, a set of 3 shelves which contain "books" that function as interactive elements providing links to each of our 3 sets of journals. The shelves also show examples of sculpties we created.

Virtual Library interior showing "bookshelves", "staircase" and the scripted sculptures I created rotating.

This screenshot shows the area of our virtual library with links to our 3 individual blogs.

This image shows our 3 blog links plus a "horse head" scripted light I created.

This image shows a sculptie, plus shows the 3 off-set/alpha channel textures we created in Photoshop and uploaded to second life. Donna created the straw bale wall, Sophie created the moss flooring and I created the lichen-covered stone wall texture.

SCRIPTING A LIGHTSWITCH IN SECONDLIFE

These were a couple of really straightforward websites for scripting a lightswitch system in secondlife. Took a couple of attempts to figure out the order of linking the prims when they are already scripted but managed it eventually and made a switch that turns on a whole group of lights. It's been really useful to be able to bring up a video tutorial instantly to answer any questions I have about digital design. And good to know there are hundreds of scripts that other users have created to copy and paste onto my prims to script them so I can use the programme at a beginner or advanced level.

LEANING PARTICLE SYSTEMS IN SECONDLIFE

Ad-hoc particle system used to simulate a galaxy, created in 3dengfx.

http://eloisepasteur.wordpress.com/learning-about-particles/#accelerate

This was a really great website I found about scripting particle systems in secondlife, we were aiming to make a waterfall and while this scripting process was really thorough it was probably a bit advanced, I'd like to try making a more complicated script from scratch at some stage now I see it's just a combination of individual commands it's not as intimidating as i'd imagined!

This is another website with heaps of different particle scripts for Second Life which can create a variety of effects.

ARCHICAD TREEHOUSE DESIGN EXERCISE AND OPENING DESIGN SKETCHPAD

Designing a "treehouse"; first experiments using archicad, playing around with various architectural elements and trying to familiarise myself with the software. Also taking snapshots of the design in plan, elevations and sections as well as various perspective view. We then uploaded images of our design to an interactive website 'opening design.com' which allows an image to be placed on a clipboard and then annotated/drawn on by multiple remote users in real-time. The link to my "sketchbook" on openingdesign is:

Our group had trouble uploading 3 sets of images onto the same sketchpad and the URL seemed to disappear after a period of time so we couldn't access the shared sketchpad again.
